The decade-old battle between rules-based and statistical machine translation has ended, with a hybrid of the two being the winner (see “Automated Translation Technology,” Nov06). In this brief we review the state of rules-based machine translation (RBMT), the statistical (SMT) variant, and their hybrid offspring.
