Ever since Common Sense Advisory conducted its first research into content
management, we have been asking people what it costs to generate the source that
gets re-purposed and translated into dozens of languages. From the beginning, many
have told us that they really don’t know (see “Beggars at the Globalization Banquet,”
Nov02). We recently heard estimates of anywhere from US$5 to $100 per word, once
you factor in the time of the author, technical reviewers, and editors. This range struck
us as too wide, so we sat down with Val Swisher, CEO of Content Rules, a company
that specializes in creating and optimizing content for the global marketplace, to get
some real data.
