Summary
Translation management systems have become an integral part of many global content management strategies (see “How to Select a Translation Management System,” Nov11). In existence for over a decade, this technology category faces the same challenges as any enterprise-class software: the need to justify the cost, the complexity, and the ongoing maintenance balanced against the automation of complex processes. However, a new challenge lurks at the periphery of the market – patents (see “Patents Pending and Granted for Translation Automation,” Oct11). Two providers of TMS technology, MotionPoint and TransPerfect, are engaged in legal action over patent infringement that could have implications for the entire computer-aided translation (CAT) software industry.
