Freelancers sit at the front lines of translation production and their views on machine translation (MT) have a direct effect on an organization’s ability to deploy solutions. They can make or break initiatives to leverage the technology.
In January and February of 2016, CSA Research surveyed 228 freelance linguists to understand their attitudes toward and use of machine translation. This brief contains critical information for language services providers and buyers of language services to prepare a strong supply chain of linguists to support their MT offerings. We: 1) present the demographics of our sample; 2) describe their feelings toward post-editing machine translation (PEMT) output; 3) investigate the PEMT requests made by clients; 4) analyze how they use the tool to increase efficiency; and 5) address the concerns of using MT from the freelancers’ perspective.
