Summary
Organizations that struggle to control translation costs and improve quality often find that addressing problems after they occur yields only modest gains, but when they look upstream and improve their source content, it can deliver substantial benefits throughout the content lifecycle.

This brief discusses how to optimize source content to speed up the translation and localization process and reduce its cost. It addresses: the information sources we consulted; the definition of content source optimization (CSO); the benefits that the practice provides; how to use the items included in the checklist as guidance for proper CSO; instructions for using the CSA Research’s “Content Source Optimization Checklist”; and the steps you can take to deliver ongoing improvement in this area. It helps practitioners evaluate their state of optimization and suggests areas for improvement.
