Summary

Increasingly, users of translation management technology express confusion about software vendor pricing schemes and ask Common Sense Advisory to assist in sorting out the details. This report lays out the issues by examining the translation pricing models of 20 active software vendors in the space. We put them in context by discussing the paradigm shift from buying software as a capital expense to leasing it as an operating expense. Then we explore the many schemes for determining the actual price of a system, based on servers, users, or throughput. In the process, we uncover what’s behind the push for innovations in pricing models for translation management systems (TMS). In the end, we provide guidance on how buyers can select the best model for their operations.
