Summary
Editing machine translation output to improve its understandability or usability still inspires strong feelings among practitioners. Nonetheless, our research has long shown that having humans post-edit MT output has real benefits in terms of lowering rates and speeding up turnaround times.

Common Sense Advisory conducted a survey of 239 translation buyers in February and March 2013. We asked about four use cases: 1) post-edited machine translation (PEMT) as an "everything included" managed service that is delivered much like human translation; 2) the use of MT software inside their companies; 3) the case where both PEMT is purchased from third parties and in-house MT is used; and 4) the decision not to use machine translation in any form.

In this report, we analyze the preferences and experiences of two types of enterprises: 1) those that buy PEMT as a deliverable or managed service; and 2) those that use MT in-house but also buy PEMT as a deliverable. We chose these groups because post-editing emerges as a practical option for nearly anyone buying translation -- and one that our research shows is gaining in popularity.  Future research will explore the other scenarios -- in-house MT or no MT at all.

This report will help enterprises align post-editing with their global content strategy, determine budgets, establish a return on investment, and prepare the foundation for rich customer experiences in more languages.
