Old machine translation systems never die; they simply change their names and owners. Nowhere is this truer than in the clutch of current German suppliers of machine translation (MT) systems, especially with the latest avatar of the METAL translation system originally developed for the German IT giant Siemens back in the 1980s. Here we discuss the latest twist in the saga of a group of European machine translation systems providers, and how they are staking out their claims in a somewhat overcrowded German-language market. As always, the story is as much about business as it is about technology. We await a broader impact in the form of more users of MT.
