Common Sense Advisory Releases Guide to Purchasing Translation and Supporting Services Online
Companies across the globe have been using online sourcing for years to purchase everything from toilet paper to construction services to turbines for commercial jets. A few buyers have just started to apply this innovative method to translation and related services, but most are just creeping to online negotiations as an element of their purchasing toolkit.

“We checked in with some of the early adopters in the translation and localization industry, gathering data via a combination of in-depth surveys and lengthy interviews with translation buyers who have first-hand e-sourcing experience ,” comments the report’s lead analyst and COO of Common Sense Advisory, Renato Beninatto.

The report found that:

  • Most companies still use traditional purchasing methods. Despite the noise in the industry and tales of online auctions gone awry, surprisingly few companies have yet to apply online sourcing to translation services.
  • Translation services fit well into an online sourcing model. Buyers can conduct smooth, successful online negotiations for translation and related services if they have the right tools in place. The report outlines these details in depth.
  • An increase in use of e-sourcing technologies. Buyers are currently using e-sourcing technologies for only 12.4 percent of companies’ total spend, although they indicate plans to increase that number to 20 percent in 2005.
  • Buyers and vendors don’t see eye to eye. Not surprisingly, translation managers and language service providers maintain a far different outlook on the impact of online sourcing in the translation and localization industry.
