Getting the global business model right isn't easy -- even for IBM's vaunted global solutions business. Given the company's reorganization away from regional centers to local business units, it sounds like the centralized marketing and salese groups might have lost touch with their targets in specific countries. IBM hopes that its new country-focused model will get it in front of more buyers, including the emerging small and medium business sector that may prefer their suppliers down the street instead of two countries over.

While IBM's global sprawl may not seem like an exemplar for smaller firms, its experience cannot be ignored. The clear message to companies aspiring to international business is that all business, like politics, is local.
