Alcatel Chooses Bowne Global Solutions: A Worldwide Project To Streamline All Multilingual Technical Documentation

There are three things we find interesting in this press release. The first is that Bowne Global (BGS) continues to do business-- and big business-- despite some uncertainty about the company's funture ownership. Whether BGS gets sold off to another language service provider (as we speculated) or a management buy-out changes the ownership structure, the company will still be a going entity with solid processes, staff, and infrastructure in place. In other words, whatever happens, the Alcatel work will get done.
The second point of interest that Alcatel has undertaken a full-bore content optimization strategy. It seeks formalized processes, better source content, and centralized control of corporate assets. Each of these goals make perfect sense for a multinational company trying to corral its runaway content.
Third, we see a language services company offering the full range of services, from content creation to distribution. Many translation agencies are looking for a role in the XML-driven world of the future where desktop publishing, large chunks of localization engineering, and other automatable tasks go the way of the buggy whip. Bowne's work on Alcatel's content assets provides a model for other service providers wondering about their future revenue. Bowne's role here is to facilitate and improve global communications for a multinational company -- that's not a bad place to be.
