Eighteen language service providers (LSPs) appeared on Inc. magazine's annual list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the United States. Most are growing at a much faster rate than the average industry growth of 7.41% that our report on "The Language Services Market: 2011" revealed.

Last year, the Inc. list contained 15 LSPs, 10 of which return this year to be joined by eight newbies (first-timers on the list are marked with an asterisk). All 18 LSPs were found in the Business Products & Services category on the Inc. list and in our directory of 25,256 LSPs. A big addition to our ranking is West Corporation, a supplier of customer relationship management (CRM) solutions that provides interpreting as part of its communications offering. West actually appeared on Inc.s 2010 list but only this year had it identified itself to the market as an LSP.

Missing from the Inc. list were any language technology companies that could have shown up in the Software category. We also reviewed the list in categories such as Government Services, Health, and IT Services for companies focused on delivering language services, but didnt find any others.

How do you get on these lists? Inc. ranks companies by their three-year growth rate, while Common Sense Advisory considers revenue. That revenue ranking puts TransPerfect at #5 in our top 50 global listWelocalize at #18, CyraCom at #21, and Language Services at #29. Global Language Solutions appears as #17 on our list of top 20 North American LSPs. Both Inc.'s and our rankings are voluntary, meaning that there may be faster-growing or bigger U.S.-based LSPs out there -- all you need do to be considered is make yourselves known to Inc. and Common Sense Advisory and participate in the respective application processes.

We did find a couple of language-related growth companies in the Education sector 1) GlobalEnglish (#2,933) with US$37.3 million in revenue, a repeat appearance from last year; and 2) Mango Languages (#534) with US$3.8 million in revenue. El Clasificado, an online classified ad site, showed up at #3,643 with US$16.2 million. Repeat showings in other sectors were the Listen Up Español call center (#1,098 with US$10.7 million), international law firm Baker & McKenzie (#4,587 with US$2.1 billion), and marketers Apco Worldwide (#4,544 with US113.4 million) and Shift Global (#4,228 with US$3 million).

As we noted last year, many of the fastest-growing firms in manufacturing, media, retail, software, and IT services will need to rely on LSPs to grow beyond their English-language domestic markets with global and multicultural offerings. In fact, many of the Inc. 5,000 firms aspire to growth beyond the United States. By our count, 93 had the word "international" in the company name, while another 48 included "global" on their mastheads. In most cases, those words signify future opportunity rather than today's reality.
