ATA Draws Over 1600 Translators

For the 46th year, the American Translators Association held its Annual Conference, this time in Seattle, Washington. One of the most active and professional associations of language professionals in the world, the ATA drew 1,620 delegates from 37 countries and almost 50 exhibitors to an event that covered topics of much interest both to linguists -- such as the standing-room only session with an interpreter from the Nuremberg trials -- and entrepreneurs.
In our recent report on the Best and Worst Language Conferences, the ATA Conference topped the list as the best in the opinion of its partipants. We credit it to its organization and transparency. Marian Greenfield, president of the association for the 2005-2007 term, was elected to this position three years ago and acted as president-elect until this conference. The new president-elect, Jiri Stejskal, will perform his vice-presidential duties such as organizing the next two events until it is his turn to be at the helm.
The ATA engine is well-oiled and managed by a professional staff based in Virginia. This guarantees the continuity and the strengthening of the organization, a sharp contrast with an unnamed industry association that poses as a non-profit organization.
ATA conferences are scheduled 5 years in advance. It so happens that in 2006 the event will be held in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, where next November we hope the crowds of linguists will gather in a rebuilt Big Easy.
