Abstract
Worldwide billions of people create enormous amounts of new information daily. Governments spew out crushing heaps of information. Corporations increase the data they store by more than 50 percent every year. To be useful, much of this content needs to be translated into many languages and formats. Most never leaves the language in which it was created.

This report focuses on the software tools that will help unlock this valuable information, especially for global enterprises – government, commercial, or academic – struggling to meet the needs and expectations of their target audiences around the globe. These organizations need to increase the productivity of developers and authors creating the applications and transforming content for global distribution. We analyze the tools that will be most valuable in this effort, discuss where they fit into the application development and content value chain, and outline how we expect these products to evolve over the coming years.

This report is divided into five sections, all of which are currently available at our member site.

  • Demand, Supply, and Evolution. This section is currently available. We discuss the drivers for multilingual information, framing the discussion in terms of the “global content value chain” and the “transformational imperative.” These concepts relate to corporate efforts in developing information life cycles, content architectures, and knowledge management frameworks. This section lays out our taxonomy for discussing globalization-enabling tools.
  • Authoring, Engineering, Management, and Translation. Each of the four technology discussions follows the same format: what it is, where it fits into the content value chain, what buyers should look for, what are its strengths and weaknesses, what it costs, and which solutions are worth watching. This sector-wide SWOT analysis of authoring, internationalization, localization, management, and translation will acquaint decision makers with the issues they will confront in choosing one of these technologies or choosing between various solutions. We will use this approach to structure future analysis of business, technology, and usage trends for these and related tools.
