Abstract |
| Imagine if, just to write your email address or access a web page, you had to write the URL in Arabic, Russian, Chinese, or some other script you don’t normally use and cannot even type on your keyboard. For most of the world’s population, this has been the unfortunate reality since the advent of the internet. Using e-mail, web, and other online applications was like wandering around in a city where they cannot read the street signs. No longer. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has introduced a process to globalize web navigation by allowing users to create international domain names (IDNs) using non-Latin characters. We spoke with Tina Dam, Senior Director at ICANN, the person in charge of the IDN program to learn what the news means for global companies and their translation providers. |
