Tuesday, February 10, 2009 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Care), Nataly Kelly (Common Sense Advisory), Carolyn Wang-Kong (Kaiser Permanente) Sponsors: Health Net of California, L.A. Care Health insurance plans in the United States face an increased need to communicate with limited English proficient (LEP) members. In the State of California, plans are working to improve access to health care services – including translation and interpreting services – in part due to Senate Bill SB 853. Because of demographic and regulatory changes, health plans need to quickly ramp up their knowledge of the best practices and technologies that facilitate the provision of language services. Common Sense Advisory will convene health plans to share findings, best practices, and lessons learned in an independent and neutral forum. What topics will be covered? - Buying translation – learn about the latest research on pricing methodologies, average prices, best practices for procuring translation services, and vendor management techniques.
- Technology – discover how machine translation (MT), computer-assisted translation (CAT), and translation management systems (TMS) can help ensure quality, improve consistency, and save costs.
- Quality assurance – learn about standards for translation quality, road blocks, the role of vendor-buyer relationships, the truth about “back translations,” sample translations, and QA processes.
- Health plan case studies – hear about the experiences of three California health plans that worked to implement technologies and create processes for providing written translation services.
