- "Why SDL Bought Trados"
Following SDL’s purchase of tool archrival Trados for US$60.0 million (£33.0 million), one of the most frequent questions we’ve been asked is whether SDL got a good deal. We interpret this to mean “did SDL overpay?” Now that SDL’s shareholders have approved the buyout, this Quick Take reviews why SDL bought Trados.
- "Lionbridge Buys Bowne Global Solutions"
After months of rumors, Lionbridge (LIOX) finally announced that it acquired the language services assets of Bowne & Co. (BNE). Lionbridge’s purchase of Bowne Global Solutions (BGS) is the latest acquisition re-shaping the language industry. Since Lionbridge’s shelf registration of US$130 million in February, we have speculated on where the company would put its cash and equity. Read what this acquisition means to you and business services.
- "Tool Shifts Signal Need for Buyer Caution"
Recent acquisitions and alliances will shake up the globalization tools industry. Lionbridge buys Logoport, Transware rescues Global Sight, and Bowne chooses to standardize on Trados. This Quick Take describes technology infrastructure models for language service providers and recommends a course of action for buyers of translation and localization.
- "One Good Tool Buy, One Goodbye"
In April we wrote that Lionbridge acquired Berlin-based Logoport for its translation memory technology and that Irish language service provider (LSP) Transware PLC bought globalization management (GMS) supplier Global Sight. The Lionbridge deal makes sense, while the Transware purchase seems misguided. In this Quick Take we lay out what makes one deal better than the other.
- "How to Avoid Getting Lost in Translation"
How buyers buy and sellers sell language services for global-ready websites and products seems broken to us. In "How to Avoid Getting Lost in Translation" we touch base with practitioners to find out how they buy translation - and offer them advice on how to do it better.
- "SDL 2005: Challenges and Opportunities"
Assessments of language services providers (LSPs) written by financial analysts omit the detail that makes this business so fascinating. On the other hand, reports written by industry insiders emphasize the linguistic importance of LSPs; absent basic business fundamentals and often with unsubstantiated estimates of market size and opportunity. We continue our series of reports about publicly-traded LSPs with our report on SDL.
